Paper by David E. Freeman, MVB, PhD
The most common diseases of the guttural pouches are empyema, tympany, mycosis, and temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO), and updates on these diseases and their treatments are the focus of this review. The challenge in diagnosis and treatment of all these diseases lies in the complex anatomy of the guttural pouch, its close relationship with other important structures at the base of the skull, easy confusion with diseases in other sites with similar clinical signs, and difficulty in safe surgical access to the affected structures within or in close contact to the guttural pouch.

Paper by Ashley G. Boyle, DVM
Strangles, caused by the gram-positive b-hemolytic, Lancefield group C bacteria Streptococcus equi subsp equi (S equi), is a highly contagious disease of equids. When unchecked, morbidity can reach 90% to 100% in naıve populations but mortality is typically low. With the combination of new vaccines, improved diagnostics, future investigations into the host response, and identifying carriers, the future looks brighter for the control of this highly contagious disease.
