AAEP XP: Ophthalmology 2025 (April, Lexington, Kentucky)

Amp up your ability to diagnose and treat ocular diseases and traumas of the eye at the AAEP’s OphthoXP, the inaugural offering in the new wet labs-focused learning series AAEP Experiential—or XP.

The event is limited to only 20 participants and features a participant-to-instructor ratio of just 4:1 to energize learning and ensure plenty of individual engagement with the expert panel of instructors.

Wet labs utilizing live animals and cadaver heads will provide hands-on training in the procedures and treatments necessary to address equine ophthalmologic conditions.

Approximately 15 hours of RACE-accredited CE expected.

Learning Opportunities Will Include:

  • Perform a complete ophthalmic examination, including nerve blocks and use of illuminated magnification, slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct/indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Refine diagnostic procedures, including orbital blocks, ophthalmic ultrasound examination and placement of subpalpebral lavage systems
  • Perform orbital and eyelid surgeries, including laceration repairs, tarsorrhaphy and enucleations
  • Examine and discuss actual equine ophthalmologic cases on live animals

Lectures and wet labs will be led by a who’s who of board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists:

Dennis Brooks, DVM, PhD, DACVO – Peterson Smith Equine Hospital, University of Florida (Emeritus)

Brian Gilger, DVM, MS, DAVCO -- North Carolina State University
